The Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity & Islam) has Divine vengeance, or the Wrath of God, as a major theme in their theologies. In a similiar vein, karma plays an all important role in the nature based as well as in the Dharmic traditions; that the “sins,” wrong-doings or anything against natural law will not go un-punished.
Without seeming like an insensitive or heartless person, is it too much of a stretch of imagination to think that the unseen hand of “God” or “karma” was at play during the recent natural disasters in Myanmar (Burma) and China? Two nations with a history of human rights abuses. Two nations that have made it policy to beat up on monks and ethnic minorities within their borders. And two nations in which innocents have suffered twice: at the hands of cruel dictatorships and at the hands of mother nature.
In the last year, Myanmar’s junta has beaten up un-armed monks and protestors and are now giving victims of the tsunami stale and rotten food while hoarding whatever relief supplies they have allowed in (and there is talk of another storm to come) while the Burmese continue to suffer. In recent months, China has cracked down not only on Tibetans but also minority Muslims, has tried to stage PR events where journalists were allowed in Tibet only to have monks tell how things really are, and in a final punch and insult carried the Olympic flame to the top of Mt. Everest as a final show of Chinese superiority over not only Tibet, but the whole world. And then the walls came tumbling down.
Perhap’s divine vengeance or karma is a way of trying to explain away and justify why bad things happen (doesn’t it seem that only the innocent suffer). Perhaps it is a way for cold or callous people to explain away their own apathies. But perhaps it is the “Divine’s” way of exposing evil in an attempt that good people will take action. Since the tsunami, the world has seen the evil of the Burmese junta. It has witnessed the apathy and callousness of the Burmese government in regards to its people. And perhaps it is time for good people to stand up to the evil regime and take it down.
